A New York City man has been sentenced to serve 15 years in federal prison for importing and distributing an illegal copy of Viagra pills that was found in his package.
A 22-year-old man who was arrested in February was sentenced Thursday in the Brooklyn Heights District Court, according to theNew York Post.
His lawyer, Michael Bresch, said he was not involved in the case and is not happy about the jail time he was handed.
"My lawyers are very concerned about what the Viagra may do to our patients," Bresch said in a telephone interview.
"What they are doing is this is a potentially dangerous and very serious criminal act. If we are not careful, they will be charged with a crime that is serious enough that it will be taken to the maximum sentence possible, and that it will be very difficult to get an attorney and a case administrator involved. This could be the next step in our journey to be successful in a matter of this nature."
The Viagra tablets had been shipped to customers in New York City from India and China, Bresch said.
"I have known some people who have been trying to get Viagra and have had them delivered in New York City and they have been very upset by what happened to them," he said. "I do not believe that we have a problem with them. This is a very serious criminal act."
The man also had a small package of Viagra hidden in his package. A package had been mailed from India and China to New York, Bresch said.
"He was in the house with the package when he was arrested, he was in the house with the package, and I was in the house with the package," he said.
The man said he had been in the house with a friend that he and the friend were sharing. He said the man was in the house with the package and was sharing it with the friend. The package was found to contain Viagra.
The man said he was told he was under investigation for importing and distributing an illegal copy of the Viagra tablet.
"We are investigating this matter and are going to the government's response and they will look at our response," Bresch said.
A judge is scheduled to sentence Bresch to a combined total of 15 years in prison, and a one-year sentence of 20 years for importing and distributing the Viagra, the court said.
The man was ordered to pay $10,000 to the state of New York for the convenience of the government.
